Chapter 8 people Overview The British (also known as Britons, informally Brits) are citizens of the United Kingdom . British people can either be English, Scottish, Welsh, or Irish (from Northern Ireland only). The British are said to be reserved in manners, dress and speech. They are famous for their politeness, self-discipline and especially for their sense of humour. British people have a strong sense of humour which sometimes can be hard for foreigners to understand. Early settlers until A.D. 1066 Early settlers between 600 BC and AD 43: Celts From AD 43 to 409: Roman occupation 5th to 7th AD: Angles, Saxons (from German tribes), Celts English people: descendants of English-speaking Anglo-Saxons who arrived from North Germany between 5th to 7th AD. 8th to 11th:Scandinavian-Viking 1066: Norman conquest; William the conqueror; Battle of Hastings Growth and immigration 12th C: internal migration; movements of Irish, Welsh and Scottish people into England. Immigration from abroad: blacks, gypsies, Jews, Poles,…. Before WWⅡ:Immigration from commonwealth nations;free access From 1962: Immigration from new commonwealth nations; restricted and treated as aliens. Attitudes toward national, regional and local identity Culturally and ethnically diverse The Scots, welsh and Northern Irish are regarded as Celtic descendant; English are considered to be Anglo-Saxons. Politically united, but not culturally. Welsh people are conscious of their cultural differences: the National Eisteddfod (诗歌大赛). Scots: unite in their defence of their national identity. In northern Ireland: differences between Roman Catholics and protestants.
