Lecture Five Language and Culture I Contents Part One Group Report Part Two Warm-up: Culturally-loaded Words Part Three Identifying Difference: Kinship terms and more Part Four Reading Comprehension Part Five Assignment Part One Group Report Further Direction: The students in one group are expected to have a real discussion, which means that you are truly and fully involved in it and share your thoughts with the other group members. During or after the discussion, a group member is supposed to take notes of group members’ remarks and sort them out into a draft report. Some time must be allotted to polish the draft report. All in all, the group report should be presented with your own thoughts in your own language. Quotations with references are permitted and encouraged, while quotations without references will be considered as plagiarism(剽窃). Part Two Warm-up: Culturally- loaded Words Words are found to have the heaviest culture load in a language. --- Deng Yanchang (邓炎昌) “… communication with a native of another language demands sharing meanings that go beyond listless dictionary definitions.” --- Seelve Denotation: dictionary definition Connotation (Cultural connotation): “the implication of a word, apart from its primary meaning”(Longman Modern English Dictionary) “the suggesting of a meaning by a word apart from the thing it explicitly names or describes”(Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary) Talk about the cultural connotations of 松, 竹,梅 vs. pine, bamboo, plum. e.g. A pine cut down, a dead pine, is no more a pine than a dead human carcass is a man.
