In his period, there were many different schools of thoughts in China. Mencius wanted to argue against them, and that’s why he talked in a lengthy and argumentative way. 3B:9 (p. 72 in Chan) Yang Chu and Mo Ti (Mo Tzu/Mozi) Egoism and Universal Love The background of Mo Tzu and his school Mo Tzu 墨子, a little bit later than Confucius, earlier than Mencius The School of Mo Tzu (or Mohism) is not only a ‘school’. It is a very well-trained organization, with central thoughts, and good in actions, etc. History. (Fung, p.50) Was once a big school, but decline quickly later. Influence (1) “In ancient China, up to the beginning of the Han Dynasty (206 BC- 220 AD), the greatest schools were Confucianism and Moism. They dominated the intellectual scene from the fifth to at least the third century B.C. and they vigorously attacked each other”. (Chan, p. 211) Influence (2) “[Moism] does not have the profound metaphysical presuppositions of either Taoism or Confucianism. Consequently it was only a temporary challenge to other schools, though a strong one.
