PHIL 2931 Mohism School of Names Schedule School of Mo Tzu Comparison with Confucianism Later Mohism Problems Comparison with Confucius Instead of Yao and Shun, Yu and Hsia Dynasty Argue that we should have universal love, not only love in five relationship with “degrees of love”. Idealistic Confucianism (esp. Mencius) vs. Practical Mo Tzu (such as: attitude on war) Against Ritual (Li) Mo Tzu strongly against ritual (Li) Think that it is a waste of resource. E.g. 3 years…. Chan 229-229 (passage 4) Practical use of resource vs. unfeeling Why Mencius thinks Mohism is a teaching of “animal” Against Music again, waste of energy Chan 227-228 (passage 3) Also against Confucianism Attitude to God and Spirit Argue that Confucius does not believe in God and spirits, which is a wrong attitude. May be a wrong understanding on Confucius’ philosophy But true that Confucius does not have such a strong attitude to God and Spirit as Mo Tzu. Inconsistency? Fung 57-58 Confucianism: does not care religion, but emphasize on Li. Mohism: does not care Li, but emphasize on religion. Solution: Confucianism- Moral; Mohism- benefit and consequence Destiny Argue that Confucians believe in destiny/determinism Chan 221-226, especially comment on 222 May be a wrong understanding on Confucianism (review Mencius’ philosophy here) Later Mohism Later Mohism clarifies some concepts further. Benefit and Harm “The beneficial is that with the obtaining of which one is pleased. The harmful is that with the obtaining of which one is displeased” (Ch. 40) (Fung, p. 122) Similar to Benthams utilitarianism. Universal Love Love All men. See Fung p. 123 for the logic of loving all and riding horses (an example of how logical) Minor: See the two objections and replies as well. (124-125) Problem Too ideal (universal love) Too practical (motivation on benefit) hard to achieve (eat little, wear bad clothes, no music, etc..) Later Mohism and School of Names They develop some logical arguments. Both later
