PHIL 2931 I-Ching (Yi Jing, or Book of Change) and Ying-Yang School 易經 (周易) 與陰陽家 Schedule I-Ching History Content Influence Ying-Yang School History Content Relationship with I-Ching Influence I-Ching (Yi-Jing/ Book of Change) 周易 Probably one of the oldest books in China. It has been divided into Texts 易經 and Commentaries (Ten Wings) 易傳/十翼 Traditionally, we believe that the Texts were completely edited around Early Chou/Zhou period (around 1000B.C.). But the content of the Texts were there much earlier. The Commentaries, were formed later, by Confucius and other generations of followers. Probably they were only completed in Warring States period or even in Han Dynasty. Texts and Commentaries The Texts contains 64 chapters. Each Chapter discuss a hexagram (double trigrams). Sometimes, the name “I-Ching” only refers to the Texts The Commentaries contains 10 chapters, which are explanations and interpretations of the Text. (see Chan 264-270). Sometimes, we use the name “Chou I/Zhou Yi” (周易) when we want to discuss both the Texts and Commentaries. (i.e. “I-Ching” can refer the Texts only, or both the Texts and Commentaries. In the later case, “I-Ching” is the same as “Chou I”.) Importance of I-Ching A very old book in China Related Schools: Confucianism, Daoism, and Ying-Yang School A story: Confucius loves to read I-Ching. His I-Ching was broken for three times, as he had read it too much and too frequently. 韋編三絕 Mystical Symbolism, naturalism, Cosmology, political philosophy(!), etc. The System Originally, I-Ching was just a book of divination. Later, people discover or interpret a lot of philosophies from I-Ching. System: Tai Chi (Great Ultimate 太極),Ying and Yang (陰陽), Four Forms (younger and elder yin and yang) 四象, Trigrams 八卦 Trigrams 八卦 Ch’ien / Qian乾 K’un / Kun坤 Chen / Zhen震 Sun / Xun巽 K’an / Kan坎 Li離 Ken / Gen艮 Tui / Dui兌 Four layers of Meanings A system of mystical symbolism A system of rational/natural symbolism A system of cosmological/metaphys
