Zhuang Zi * CONTENTS Zhuang Zi’s Philosophy Way of Achieving Absolute Happiness Tao Can Never Be Spoken Aesthetic Significance Zhuangzi lived during the fourth century B.C., a time known as the Warring States period in China. That was a period of disunity in which rival nations battled constantly for more land and greater power. As a result, it was a time of widespread death and destruction. Zhuang Zi’s Philosophy Zhuang Zi advanced the concept of the Way and gave Taoism a dynamic character. To him, the Way as nature is not only spontaneity but also a constant flux, for all things are in a state of perpetual self-transformation. Zhuang Zi emphasized individual freedom and condemned all laws, morals, institutions, and governments, which, he said, were created to establish uniformity and suppress difference. Way of Achieving Absolute Happiness The perfect man has no self; the spiritual man has no achievements; and the true sage has no name.至人无己,神人无功,圣人无名。 Perfect Man He is absolutely happy, because he transcends the ordinary distinctions of things. He also transcends the distinction between the self and the world, the “me” and the “non-me”.
