Therefore, the temperature of the gas out of the burner is designed to be as high as the first stage of turbine blades can widthstand. * This results in increased operating temperatures typically around 2200 – 2700 degrees F (or 1200 – 1500 C). The schematic on the right shows the coolant air‘s flow path to a first stage turbine blade. There is however, a penalty incurred for extracting air. Extracting air from the compressor lowers the thermal efficiency and power output of a turbine. Therefore, to optimize a turbine‘s efficiency, it is important to optimize blade cooling. * Turbine blades are cooled both internally and externally. In internal cooling, coolant gas is passed through serpentine passages in the turbine blade. These passages may feature enhanced surfaces such as ribs or pin fins to promote turbulence and in turn leads to higher heat transfer (meaning more heat removed from the blade). External cooling is done by jet impingment. Air is injected from internal passages to the outer surface. This air forms a protective layer between the blade surface and the hot gas flow from the combustor. * Let‘s take a look at a typ
