COURSE SYLLABUS 2009-10 South County Secondary School AP Computer Science A Mr. Robert Jones Course Description: Students develop detailed knowledge of the fundamental structure of a computer system, with emphasis on problem solving and structured programming. Skills in defining, writing, and running programs on a computer are develop that allows students to work on both mathematical and nonmathematical problems. Java is the main programming language. This course is designed to prepare the student for the AP Computer Science A exam. Unit 1: Java Karel the Robot Unit 4: Data Storage with Arrays Unit 2: Graphics with Turtle Unit 5: Data Processing using Sorting and Searching Unit 3: Development of User Interface Textbook: Java Programming , Joyce Farrell. $45.00 SCSS tracks all textbooks using a barcode system, therefore, a student must pay the full replacement cost for the book if the book is lost or the barcode is removed or defaced. Grading Design: The student will be evaluated each quarter according to the following criteria: Major Assessments Unit Tests 35% Projects 35% Minor Assessments Homework, 10% Class work, Quizzes 20% The final exam grade will be cumulative. Final course grades will be an average of the four quarter grades and final exam. The quarter grades and the final exam will each count as 20%. There will be no significant extra credit given in Computer Science. It will be given during the exam week. Retake Policy: Students will not have an opportunity to retake tests.
