Reproductive biology characteristics of Prionace glauca
in the tropical Eastern Pacific Ocean

Abstract: Duri g July-November i 2003, pelagic fish survey was co ducted by lo gli er coveri g areas of 03b S- 17bS , 96bW-
146bW. Sampli g gear was lo gli e fishi g. With the precaudal le gth i creme t, the total go ad weight of male blue shark i creases
greatly but that of female i creases little. The average value of TGSI(total go adosomatic i dex) of female amou tsto 0. 64 but male
i creasesto 0. 98. The blue shark is viviparous a d the period of parturitio appears i Oct. - Nov . The sex ratio of adult blue shark
is ot fitted to 1: 1. Prelimi ary results show that female matures at total le gth 183 cm(precaudal le gth 137cm) . The broods ra ge
from 13 to 62 a d average 34. 29? 11. 2 ( = 28) . There is o obvious relatio ship betwee broods a d mater al le gth. The le gth
at birth arrives at total le gth 44cm. Based o the observatio of egg diameter i the ovary of female blue shark, the maximum of egg
diameter is 16- 18 mm occurred i Nov. a d at the same time fertilized eggs appear. Based o the clasper le gth a alysis, the
smallest male matures at total le gth 174 cm (precaudal le gth 131 cm) .
