It is helpful to use a dictionary to check and note down the meaning of all the new words while reading. 10. The lack of cultural knowledge may affect the rate of reading comprehension. 11. Possessing a large amount of vocabulary is the key for reading comprehension. 12. Reading can best be improved by being engaged in reading and reading more. Activity 9: Handout Activity In groups of 4 discuss and decide which questions are GOOD and which are NOT SO GOOD. Then we’ll quickly check any confusing answers in Open Class Handouts Text should be interesting and understandable, otherwise they are frustrating. Give students a task to do before they read. Tasks should make the students understand the meaning, not just focus on small details. Use different tasks to improve reading. If you only ask comprehension questions you are testing students, not helping them. When you teach reading you should help to prepare students to read any kind of text. A teacher should guide and help, but gradually help less and less, so students become independent. Help your students to focus on the meaning of a text, not on understanding every word. Reading aloud is OK to practice pronunciation or to memorize, but it doesn’t help students to understand. After students have understood a text well, then it is possible to focus on details like grammar, special vocabulary, or pronunciation. Activity 10. Reasons for reading activities Look at the table in your hand outs. Match “What the teacher does” with “Why the teacher does it”.
