2004年2月现代外语(季刊) February2004 第27卷第1期 ModernForeignLanguages(Quarterly) Vo1.27No.1 RELEVANCE,WORDMEANINGAND COMMUNICATION:THEPAST,PRESENT ANDFUTUREOFLEXICALPRAGMATICS* DEIRDREW ILSON DepartmentofLinguistics,UniversityCollegeLondon Abstract:Lexicalpragmaticsisarapidlydevelopingbranchoflinguisticsthat investigatestheprocessesbywhichlinguistically-specified(`literal’)wordmeanings aremodifiedinuse.Well-studiedexamplesincludenarrowing (e.g.drinkusedto mean`alcoholicdrink)，approximation(e.g.squareusedtomean s‘quarish)and metaphoricalextension(e.g.dragonusedtomean`frighteningperson).Inthepast, narrowing, approximationandmetaphoricalextensionhavebeenseenasdistinct pragmaticprocessesandstudiedinisolationfromeachother.Recently,relevance theorists(e.g.SperberWilson1998;Carston2002;WilsonSperber2002)have beendefendingthealternativeviewthattheyareoutcomesofasinglepragmatic processwhichfine-tunestheinterpretationofvirtuallyeveryword.Afterbriefly outliningsomeoftheargumentsforthisunifiedrelevance-theoreticapproach,and illustratingitsapplicationtosomeexamplesfromdailycommunication,Iwillsuggest somewaysinwhichitmightbetested, andexploreitsimplicationsforfuture researchonpragmatics, languageacquisition, languagechange, developmental psychologyandneuropsychology.Thispaperformspartofabroaderprojecton lexicalpragmaticswhichhasjuststartedatUniversityCollegeLondon, witha conferencetobeheldinEnglandin2005.Theprojectwouldbenefitgreatlyfrom collaborationwithcolleaguesinChina,andIwillendbyoutliningsomepossibilities forjointresearch.
