Chapter 1 Introduction Reading is an essential skill for learning language. For second language learners, reading provides them a major channel to get language input to compensate the limited exposure to direct communication with native speakers. Therefore, at schools reading ability has caught much attention. Just as Nuttall points out: “Reading widely is a highly effective means of extending our command of language” (Nuttall 1982:19), it plays an important role in classrooms where language learning is the central purpose. Reading is claimed to be helpful to expand vocabulary of students, to enlarge their language knowledge, and to improve their linguistic performance; further it is regarded as beneficial to the enhancement of students’ cultural literacy and to the deep comprehension of the connection between language and thoughts. (叶东 2001) It is stipulated in Shanghai Primary and Secondary School English Curriculum Standards that students graduating from senior high schools should have read at least 510, 000 words for extracurriculum reading, and students should be able to get enough information and be able to analyze and appreciate certain articles through broadcasts, television, magazines, and the Internet, etc. This requirement shows, in an alternative way, the important role of reading in English learning during the senior high school period.
