Bad quality of forage – energy and palatability * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This is a visual demonstration of the different rate of fermentation of wheat compared to Maxibeet (un-molassed) Premium / Supaflow (molassed). It is a simple technique that involves measuring the gas produced from a quantity of feed after adding a buffer (to mimic saliva) and some rumen liquid. The rate and quantity of gas production allow the curves to be drawn. If the rate is initially very high the feed is highly fermentable – please see the tall red spike that is illustrating the rapid fermentation of the wheat – this will be mostly the starch. Please note the initial blue bump / shoulder this is the rapidly fermentable sugar in the molassed SBF. Compare this to making a domestic fire, the paper is the sugar, the starch the sticks and the digestible fibre the coal. * Higher intakes when SBP replaces wheat * This is one of a series of studies that have shown the importance of digestible fibre based concentrates stimulating the physical development and physiological and metabolic development of the rumen wall. It has been speculated that it is the butyrate in particular that stimulates the development of the cells in the rumen wall. This trial demonstrated that when barley (starchy feed and hence more likely to produce propionate) was partially and incrementally replaced by MSBF and citrus pulp the calves responded by having a higher dry matter intake reflecting the more developed rumen in those calves that had been fed digestible fibre. MSBF contains ~50 more NDF than citrus pulp so arguably it is the feed of choice. This allows a smoother transition at weaning reducing the risk of a post weaning check. A further unpublished trial from the same worker at the Rowett showed that when MSBF was the sole replacement to barley there was a greater concomitant increase in LWG.
