College English (Book Five) Background 1. What is Four Freedoms? It is a popular name for what was proposed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in his State of the Union address of January 6, 1941 in which he said, In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expression — everywhere in the world. The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way — everywhere in the world. The third is freedom from want, which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants — everywhere in the world. The fourth is freedom from fear, which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor — anywhere in the world. 2. Why the people of English wanted to settle in America? At the beginning of the 17th century large numbers of Englishmen became eager to go to America. Many of them thought they could own their own farms and make a better living there. Some wanted to go and look for gold in the New World. For some others, America would be a land where they could worship God as they pleased. Still others thought that they were losing their rights in government, as the kings of England believed that God had given them the right to rule the people and anything the king wished was law. These people wanted to go to America to regain their right to share in making laws. 3. What does the author mean
