The role of the state in shaping world sport Professor Barrie Houlihan Loughborough University, UK Aims of the lecture To evaluate the usefulness of the concept of globalisation in understanding contemporary sport To analyse the role of the state in the development of globalised sport The concept of globalisation The conceptualisation of globalisation has been criticised for: Eclecticism Preoccupation with effects Overly rapid marginalisation of the state The concept of globalisation Eclecticism- lack of clear research design and tendency to combine unrelated phenomena Preoccupation with effects – less interest in causes of globalisation Marginalisation of the state – assumption that globalisation is essentially an economic or social process Conceptualising globalisation Three challenges: Establishing the relative importance and relationship between economic, social/cultural and political dimensions of globalisation Introducing more precision into the discussion of globalisation and considering interpretations of the globalisation process Distinguishing between globalisation as a process and a globalised world as an outcome (achieved condition) Globalisation – the relationship between social/cultural, political and economic dimensions Distinguishing between globalisation as a process and a globalised world as an outcome What criteria would you use to decide whether we lived in a globalised world?
