Hey guys, let’s come to the literary style of our great Frost. Frost is famous for his simple style, philosophical thoughts, symbolism, metaphor and naturalism. Here I want to say something about Naturalism. The term naturalism describes a type of literature that attempts to apply scientific principles of objectivity and detachment to its study of human beings. Unlike realism, which focuses on literary technique, naturalism implies a philosophical position: for naturalistic writers, since human beings are, in Emile Zola’s phrase, “human beasts”, characters can be studied through their relationships to their surroundings. Frost is often compared with Wordsworth and Emerson in some aspects. Wordsworth may have influenced Frost in many aspects which Emerson’s influence is largely the concept of “natural-as-symbol”. And in some degree, Frost’s life experience also has a great influence on his poetic creations and is helpful to form his own style and characteristics. His works often set in rural New England. Natural surroundings give him much inspiration and trigger his imagination.
