Amount that buyers purchase equals the amount that producers sell. At the equilibrium price, consumers and sellers are in a stable state, which represents the optimal choice of economy. Market failure occurs when the market is not efficient. Like monopoly, one seller manipulates the market; inflation and so on. Review Lecture Four Consumer Surplus: Willingness to pay Consumer Surplus = Value to Buyers-Amount paid by buyers Consumer surplus and demand curve The demand curve represents the value to buyers Producer Surplus: Cost Producer surplus= Amount sold by sellers -cost to Sellers Producer surplus and supply curve The supply curve represents the cost to sellers Total surplus= Value to buyers-cost to sellers Three ways might increase the total surplus: Reallocate consumption among consumers: taking a good/service away from a buyer
