If you cannot answer “Yes” to all of them, then your essay has not been done well and you must correct it before submitting it. Your grade will be based on the basis of your belief in your answers to the questions. In other words, do not just answer “Yes” without any justification. Is there a clear outline for the essay? Is the outline included for submission? Is there an interesting title that doesn’t just repeat the topic? Questions before you submit CE essay: Does your essay clearly focus on causes, effects, or both? Does your essay have a clear purpose? Does your thesis statement express a qualified, manageable assertion? Is it interesting or does it just reiterate the topic? Does your essay follow a logical organizational plan? Is the order of presentation you use (chronological, least-to-most important, or most-to-least important) effective? Is each cause or effect explained fully? Is each paragraph well developed and focused on a separate cause or effect? Are your introduction and conclusion effective? Parallel Structure An important requirement for coordinate structures is that they be parallel. A structure is parallel when all the coordinates are of the same grammatical form. The conjunctions must join comparable structures, such as pairs of noun phrases or verb phrases or adjectives. The short blonde woman and her apricot poodle seemed to belong together. The stew smells delicious and tastes even better. The entire cast gave a powerful and exciting performance. Parallel Structure Unparallel structures occur most commonly with the correlative conjunctions: both-and, either-or, neither-nor, and not only-but also.
