It also controls calls to and from other telephony and data systems, such as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN). Mobile Switching Subsystem (MSS) In the MSC/VLR server this involves functions for setting up and controlling calls to and from mobile subscribers, functions for supplementary service interactions, functions for call independent supplementary service procedures. In the GMSC server this involves interrogation for routing data towards HLR, functions for setting up and controlling calls to mobile subscribers. In SMS-GMSC this involves telecommunication service analysis. In SMS-IWMSC this involves telecommunication service analysis. Mobile Mobility and radio Subsystem (MMS) The following main functions are implemented in MMS in the MSC/VLR server: Mobility management functions Handover/relocation functions Base Station Controller (BSC) functions Radio network data Functions for signalling to or from the mobile station (using BSSAP) and between other system entities (using MAP and BSSAP+) Functions for signalling to or from RNC (using RANAP) Mobile Data Subsystem (MDS) In MSC/VLR Server this involves: functions for updating of the mobile subscribers location (location updating/location cancellation) in the different location registers func
