His particular interest is SME financial management and he has authored or co-authored three books and over 30 international refereed journal articles on this topic. Professor McMahon is a past National President of the Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand (SEAANZ), and he has also been a Board Member and Senior Vice President of the International Council for Small Business (ICSB). Professor McMahon serves on the Editorial Advisory Panels of Small Enterprise Research: The Journal of SEAAANZ, International Small Business Journal, and Journal of Small Business Management.
