Kings—Barons—Knights, a feudal system of hierarchy was formed The language For three centuries after the Norman Conquest, two languages were used side by side in England. Upper classes: French, Latin The common people: Old English Three languages co-existed in England. French became the official language used by the king and the Norman lords; Latin became the principal tongue of church affairs and in universities; and Old English was spoken only by the common English people. Thus, Britain was opened up to the whole European continent. The literature Romance was a type of literature that was very popular in the Middle Ages. It is about the life and adventures undertaken by a knight. It reflected the spirit of chivalry. Subject matter: the Matter of France Matter of Greece and Rome Matter of Britain tales having for their heroes Arthur and his knights of the Round Table Romance which uses narrative verse or prose to sing knightly adventures or other heroic deeds is a popular literary form in the medieval period. It has developed the characteristic medieval motifs of the quest, the test, the meeting with the evil giant and the encounter with the beautiful beloved. If the epic reflects a heroic age, the romance reflects a chivalric one. Homework: 1. Find out the definition of chivalry 2.
