(Received, lJ MaTch 1991 .. infinalfaTm, JI Jufy 199/) The adsorption and desorption processes by solid materials are important in determining the movement and fate of peslicide compounds in aquatie systcms. ehitin is one of ¡he constituenls of natural organic matter and may serve as a model organie phasc for studying the pesticidc adsorption-desorption in marine systems. The lindane adsorption-desorption to ehitin has becn studied as a funclion of chitin concentra- t I tíon (2.5gl- to 12.5gl- ), temperalure (5 to 45°C), pH (1.5 to 8) and salinity (15r.,., to 36;:.,.,). 80th, Freundlich and linear isotherms for the adsorption and dcsorplion processes were used 10 represent the experimental data. Two-sile Langmuir isotherm can describe well the measured sorption isotherm. The adsorbent-eoncenlralion elfeel and Ihe adsorption-desorption hysteresis show the existence of dilferent classes of site with different accessibility. Thus, the adsorption·desorption reaction of lindane is Ihe result of more Ihan a single mcchanism.
