* * * * * * Other modular storage products require that every LUN be assigned to one of the controllers and that a preferred path to that LUN be assigned from the server that needs to access the LUN. If the preferred path is incorrectly assigned, then the performance is reduced. If LUN assignments are moved over time to reflect changing workloads, then so too must the preferred paths be reassigned. Since the AMS2000 can accept I/Os to any LUN through any host port, this complexity is eliminated. Another benefit is that there is no longer a need for additional path management software as long as native path management resides on the host to guard against an HBA failure. * * * * * * Since other modular systems require that every LUN be assigned to one of the controllers, administrators spend time analyzing the projected workload of newly created LUNs to try to ensure that both controllers are equally utilized. Since actual workloads change over time and may not match the projections, imbalances can occur that slow down performance. The AMS2000 continually monitors workload based on the microprocessor utilization rates in each controller. If one of the controllers is highly utilized while the other has excess capacity, then the system will automatically move the processing requirements for selected LUNs from the over utilized to the under utilized controller. This is done automatically and can eliminate performance issues before anyone becomes aware. * * * * * * Most other modular systems require that the system be shut down to install new microcode. With the AMS2000, the microcode updates are done on the controller microprocessors with the host ports remain active. Any incoming or outgoing traffic is simply redirected to the operational controller during the update. Then the process is done in reverse to update the other controller.
