About half of all non-traumatic lower extremity amputations are performed on diabetic patients. We investigated 140 senior citizens in Hsin-Chu, Taiwan, regarding their foot problems. Preliminary results indicated that partial numbness (unsympathetic), dry and/or fission, and ember-gray nails (leuconychia) are mostly found. Based on Tek Scan examination, the diabetes showed higher rate (76%) of abnormal foot pressure distribution than that of the others (45%). Studies are in progress to determine the major contributory factors for foot problems, especially in diabetic patients.
