On choice in homeless to Harvard
Homeless to Harvard is a TV film directed by Peter Levin in2003. It is based on Liz’s autobiography. Both of little Liz’s parents take drugs and her mother also has psychological problem. Liz seldom went to school but got good score and was promoted. In high school, she finished two years’ lessons in two. Thanks to her choices and her perseverance, she got a scholarship and was admitted by Harvard.
The film starts with Liz’s narration and Flashback to the time when she was little. This film has several themes, such as Liz’s persistence, her great love for her mother and the choices she had made. The most important thing this film tells is that “it is your choices rather than the background you are from that decide what you will be”. Before Liz went to college, she made many important choices. She chose to do her paper when her teacher tried to get it back. When she got the chance to talk with David, she had an application to make, at that time, she chose to push herself to make her life better. When she was talking to David in the office room, shallow focus and close-up are used, the background is not clear. the audience’s attention was then caught by Liz, in the diegesis world this indicate that on one’s way to success, a person’s background is not so important as the person herself.
There is another important person in this film桟hris, Liz ’s friend in school, she is important because she and Liz formed a strong contrast in their choosing of what to be. They were from almost the same unfortunate background. But Liz chose to be normal and Chris chose to be “trash”.
When Liz met Chris again at high school, point-of-view shot was used and in the mise-en-scene Chris dressed the same as she did before, this show she didn’t want to change, but Liz changed a lot.
