Background of the Text Marco Polo was an Italian traveler and author, born in Venice Italy. In 1275, Marco Polo and his father arrived in China and entered Kublai Khans service. The Polos stayed in China until 1292, when they left the country as escorts for a Mongol princess traveling by sea to Persia. In 1298 Marc Polo was taken prisoner by Genoa after a battle between Venice and Genoa. During his imprisonment, he dictated to a fellow prisoner the detailed accounts of his travels. Marco Polos literary work, The Travels of Marco Polo is perhaps the most famous and influential travel book in history. It gave medieval Europe it s first consequential knowledge of China. For a long time it was the only existing source in Europe for information on the geography and life in the far east. Since 20th century, Marco Polo’s famous book aroused considerable controversy. Some scholars have pointed out apparent mistakes and important omissions in Marcos writings. But they also conclude that his work is an accurate, important and useful source from an extraordinary period of Chinese history.
