But what about all other populations? Do they grow exponentially? NO Next Model of population growth: (Pg. 1160) “Logistic population growth” which incorporates carrying capacity Next Model of population growth: Logistic population growth which incorporates carrying capacity Carrying capacity (K)– the maximum population size that a particular environment can support with no net increase or decrease over a relatively long period of time (Pg. 1160) “K” is not an absolute; It varies over time and space with the abundance of limiting resources (ENVIRONMENT DEPENDENT!!!) Logistic population growth: 1) incorporates changes in “r” as N approaches K 2) allows r to vary from r max to zero 3) population growth is rapid when N K 4) population growth slows when N is close to K Building the mathematical model: Start with: dN/dt = rN New expressions: If K = maximum population size for a given environment then, K – N = the # of additional individuals the environment can sustain Building the mathematical model: Start with: dN/dt = rN New expressions: K – N Therefore, (K – N)/K tells us what fraction of K is still available for population growth ex. Using (K – N)/K Ex. If K = 1000, and N = 10, Then what fraction of K is still available for population growth? Using (K – N)/K Ex. If K = 1000, and N = 10, Then what fraction of K is still available for population growth? (1000 – 10)/ 1000 = .99 or 99% ex. Using (K – N)/K Ex. If K = 1000, and N = 900, Then what fraction of K is still available for population growth? Using (K – N)/K Ex. If K = 1000, and N = 900, Then what fraction of K is still available for population growth? (1000 – 900)/1000 = .10 or 10% Using (K – N)/K in dN/dt = rN We get… Pg. 1161 dN/dt = rN (K – N)/K This model reduces r as N increase toward K ex. Pg. 1161 x = Pg. 1161 x = Per capit
