American History Part Two Section One America WW1 From “Neutrality” to Entering the Great War This was a war between two military camps: the Allies of Britain, France, Russia and their supporters and the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary and their supporters. The Expansion of America after the War The essence of Wilson’s “Fourteen Points” was to create a new world order in which America would be in a most advantageous position. In other words, Wilson’s policy was to “Americanize” the world. The peace treaty was signed at Versailles on June 28, 1919. The Great Depression (1929-1933) Below the surface of economic prosperity, there was trouble brewing. What were these troubles? Roosevelt’s “New Deal” Something about Franklin Roosevelt. Something about his “New Deal”. America WWⅡ 1. The Threat of War The depression greatly weakened the capitalist powers, among which Germany was hit even harder. Desperate conditions in Europe now led to the rise of totalitarian governments. Europe was once more turned into a gunpowder barrel and only a spark was needed to kindle another big war. American Neutrality In 1939, World War Ⅱ began. Americans were more concerned with avoiding foreign conflict than with combating foreign aggression. Neutrality Acts. Pearl Harbor America’s Entering the War There are many factors which contributed to America’s change of policy. What are they? The Japanese air raid on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was the direct cause for America’s entrance into the war. America in after the War Soon after the U.S. entered the war, the Western Allies decided that their essential military effort was to be concentrated in Europe, where the enemy lay, while the Pacific theater was to be secondary. In 1945, Japan surrendered and World War Ⅱ came to a close. On October 24, 1945, the United Nations came into existence. American prosperity continued after the war.
