Say what you mean.” Speak or Write with a native style Be original In many cultures, the point of speaking in public or writing for an audience is: to imitate the style of famous orators and writers Native speakers of English expect writers to be original in their opinions choice of supporting details Readers of English want to see new twists on old ideas and original uses of language Speak or Write with a native style Natives expect audiences to disagree In many cultures, audiences are expected to agree with the speaker or writer. By contrast, writers in English may invite questions, criticisms, or even disagreement In some cultures, such responses by the audience might be rude, but they show English-speaking writers that the audience taking their ideas seriously Speak or Write with a native style Question authority Native speakers of English assume they are operating within a democratic society that encourages open debate. Every belief the audience holds can be challenged. The English speaker’s attitude may bother some members of some cultural groups. To those groups, English speaker may seem to have no firm beliefs and disrespect other’s beliefs This is not true. They are just questioning and trying to get a good understanding Speak or Write with a native style Choose a topic well English speakers write or speak to: Inform Persuade (unpopular opinion) Native writers will claim to know more about the topic than the reader does; this is not rude.
