Colors have long been used to express or indicate the character’s features and fate. Thus the old man’s fate of only dragging the fish bone back is sure to be indicated in the previous passage. Chapter II The Usage of Color and Its Indication on the Old Man’s Fate 2.1 Blue Traditionally, blue is always associated with peace. However, in English, blue can mean quite differently. It is often related to bad mood. When we say someone is in a blue mood or having the blues, it means he or she is not feeling very well emotionally.[1] When the old man went fishing alone, his preparation kind of showed his fate of not bringing a fish back. Here’s part of his preparation, …he had a big blue runner and…[2] According to the previous paragraph, it is not a lucky sign for success. During the old man’s journey, Hemingway described the scenery. …with the gray blue hills behind it. The water was a dark blue now, so dark that it was almost purple…[2] The color of the water was dark blue that it gave out a sense a depression which partially indicated that the old man’s journey would not be so smooth. There might be obstacles waiting for him. When he came back from his trip, he might have the blues for not having a fish. 2.2 Green Green is the symbol of vigor and youth in English. For instance, to remain green forever means to live to an old age energetically. In the book, Hemingway described as such, [1] …was looped onto a green-sapped stick…[2] This hinted that the old man set out with a positive attitude.
