Introductiontesting can set an objective for language learners-the subject of language learning-to achieve, which in turn can be a motivator for them to study hard. Though the motivation coming from passing the examination belongs to what Gardner called ‘instrumental motivation’, which he believed would increase language learners’ affective filter and vanish once the aim has been achieved, many studies demonstrate that language learners with the ‘instrumental motivation’ are liable to succeed compared with those with the integrative motivation since they have much more enthusiasm for the language study and more devoted to it in a certain period. Therefore we may conclude that the testing could be a powerful propeller to motivate the language learners’ independent study and accelerate the whole learning process.
