The Analysis of Pessimism in Ernest Hemingway’s A Fare Well to Arms Abstract:This paper centers on the pessimistic character in the work A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway and try to develop a method to illustrate the influnce of this giant in literature. The paper start with a general introduction of the raising of the modernism and its delopment in the United States. The Ernest Hemingway is illustrated as the model of this trend of literature. And in the end, the writer comes a conlusion that Ernest Hemingway plays a curicial role in the American litrature, especially in the progressing of American modernism literature. key words: Ernest Hemingway; Pessimism; American literature Introduction：The word “modern” means “of the recent times,” but its meaning is quite elastic. When used in the literature, it refers to the literature after 1914 and WW1. In modern times, a great change took place in the world literature. Modern writers carried out many reforms in theme, form and gained important achievements. Consequently these appeared many great writers and typical works of modernism in American literature, such as Ernest Hemingway and his Fare Well to Arms. WW1 broke through people’s conventions and made people’s mind more active than ever before. They gradually freed themselves from the traditional concepts of culture and morality, and created the literal art of modernism.The people of the United States of America attempted to withdraw from world commitments and return to peacetime interests and to normalcy. However, serious social and economic problems remained unsolved. After the WW1, some young disappointed American writers, such as Ernest Hemingway, chose Paris as their place of exile and used their wartime experience as the basis for their works. Most of them had been shocked or wounded in the war. They had cut themselves off their past in America in order to create a new type of writing which had never
