A great number of researchers are strongly against the translatability of poetry on the ground that poetry is too delicate to be translated. In spite of this, there have been oceans of poetry translated in the world of literature, which is an undeniable face. Therefore, it is meaningless and unhelpful to argue whether poetry is translatable or not. What’s significant is to find and define the difficulties in poetry translation and then try to seek solutions to these difficulties. Only when we have a clear idea about the difficulties, can we hope to find some solutions. Therefore, this thesis first attempts to define the difficulties of poetry translation, and then sets out to discuss some translating strategies which are intended to help solve the difficulties.……… After a brief discussion on translatability, the thesis discusses several methods of poetry translation with examples taken from well-acknowledged translators of poetry. These methods, to some extent, can overcome these difficulties, or compensate some of the lost features. In talking about the difficulties of poetry translation and possible solutions, this thesis intends to throw a new insight into the much-discussed problem of translatability. It stresses that, as loss is inevitable in the process of translation, translatability is only a relative concept, which does not require an exact word-to-word equivalence but a realization in similar aesthetic effects. This is where the significance of this thesis lies.
