An Existentialistic Analysis of As I Lay Dying 《我弥留之际》的存在主义解读 By Liu Pingping A Thesis Submitted to the School of Foreign Languages in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts University of Jinan Jinan, China June 9, 2011 Abstract As I Lay Dying, one of William Faulkner’s representative works, enjoys a great reputation both at home and abroad. Since its publication in 1930, this work has evoked heated argument among the critics. The award of Nobel Prize of this novel adds fuel to the flames. Deeply influenced by Faulkner’s living background and life experiences, this work reflects Faulkner’s life philosophy梕xistentialism in a certain way. kThe existentialists advocate the ideas that existence proceeds being and the absurdity of being. Novels steeped in existentialism, often expose the absurdity of the world and the suffering of human life, and thus emphasize the principle of free choice. In As I Lay Dying, by virtue of describing the pilgrimage-like journey of Bundren family and portraying the main characters like Addie and Carl, Faulkner reveals that everyone is isolated, living in an absurd world with no purpose of existing, and only by means of free choice can one identifies himself.
