Its principle is to utilize the friction between a revolving part connected to the wheel and a non-revolving one connected to the frame to retard the motion of the vehicle. A brake system is composed of the brake and its control mechanism, including such major parts as brake disk (or drum), shoe, master cylinder, pedal, brake line, hose, etc. (shown in the figure 4.4.1). Brakes are located at each wheel. The brake pedal is connected to a plunger in a master cylinder, which is filled with hydraulic fluid. When the brake pedal is depressed, the force is increased by the master cylinder and transferred through brake hoses and lines to the four brake assemblies. There are two kinds of independent braking system. Both the service brake and parking brake are indispensable for slowing or stopping the vehicle. The service brake will be put into effect when the driver needs to slow and stop the automobile.
