Transient Threats No lasting intent to harm someone “heat of the moment”…feelings dissipate It’s clear threat is over and includes and explanation or apology No protective action is required but discipline may be severe (especially if a bomb threat was made) Can be quickly and easily resolved Who Conducts Threat Assessment? A Multidisciplinary Team A school or local police officer A school administrator A school mental health professional- psychologist, social worker, or counselor A teacher or teachers who know the student in question well What is Involved in a School Threat Assessment Process? Identification of threats made by students. Evaluation of seriousness of threat and danger it poses to others, recognizing that all threats are not the same (e.g., toy guns, cub scout eating utensils at school are not dangerous). Intervention to reduce risk of violence. Follow-up to assess intervention results. Role of Mental Health Assess the student’s mental state and need for treatment Parent permission not needed when there is a threat to self or others but parents should be notified of the assessment Consider info from previous evaluation but may not address current concerns Develop a threat reduction plan and increase support for the student Expectations of Mental Health Professional Can not definitively determine if a student is capable of violence but can determine risk and protective factors and should provide a written report with recommendations. Structured Assessment of Violent Risk Youth (SAVRY) Risk viewed as “dynamic” subject to change (e.g. substance abuse) not just as “static”(history of being abused) Most recommended instrument and improvement noted in clinicians’ ability to distinguish violent individuals Previous assessment has been unstructured purely “clinical” SAVRY Systematic risk assessment with checklist of risk factors related to violence for 12 to 18 year olds Systematic risk assessments perform better than unstructured ones Dynamic ri
