The risk of combined cardiovascular disease in ALLHAT was higher in participants with impaired renal function at baseline compared with those with baseline GFR of 90 or more. At 4 years, SBP was generally higher among participants assigned to lisinopril or amlodipine compared to chlorthalidone, significantly so in participants with baseline GFR’s of 60 or more. The DBP pattern across treatment groups and GFR categories was not consistent. Prior to discussing the outcome results by GFR subgroup, we should review some issues in evaluating treatment effects by subgroup: Statistical power for
