Paragraph hooks (段落钩)

Paragraph hooks (段落钩) Paragraph hooks is another cohesion technique which create coherence between paragraphs. Instead of linking one sentence to the next, paragraph hooks link one paragraph to the next. Paragraph hooks are based on repetition of keywords between paragraphs and these help students to guide their audience: the writer repeats (or use a synonym for) one or more keywords or phrases in one paragraph in the first sentence of the following paragraph. A combination of transitions and paragraph hooks is often the most effective means of linking paragraphs Read the following paragraph. Circle the paragraph hooks and join them; then underline the transitions in the paragraph. in 1889, when the British occupied Sudan, their first aim was to find land for planting cotton because many textile industries in England at that time needed cotton. After a serious study by the English agricultural experts, the Gezira area was chosen for the establishment of an agricultural project. The choice was excellent; even today, although there are now other agricultural schemes in Sudan, still the Gezira project is the most successful. the main reason for the success of the Gezira Project is its soil. The clay allows the construction of canals which do not require concrete. In addition, the Gezira area slopes downward towards the north and west. This makes the sitting of the canal system extremely easy.
