Unit 4. Talking and Chatting  Different situations call for different approaches. Formal situations call for something more formal, and relaxed ones should be relaxed. Chatting Talking 1. Initiating a talk/chat Step 1 Smile. Say good morning. Nod your head. Show your approachability. Step 2 Introduce yourself. Say, “Hi, my name is John.” Offer a handshake. Step 3 Start your conversation by making eye contact with the stranger. Speak loud enough to be heard. 2. Listening in talking/chatting Paying attention to what is being said. Finding out what the other person is interested in. 3. Joining a talking/chatting? Litening and judging the situation Listen to what they are saying, and when its appropriate, give your opinion on whatever theyre talking about or ask a question. If you dont know what they are talking about but it sounds interesting, ask them about it. Considering your response before disagreeing . If you consider it important then politely point out your difference of opinion. Do not disagree merely to set yourself apart. Paraphrasing what you have heard, using your own words. It shows respect for the other person when you use your speaking turn to show you have been listening and not just to say something new. Making arguments Dont just share your feelings. Nor just share your opinions without backing them up. Knowing when the conversation is over Shake hands with the other people and be sure to tell them you enjoyed talking with them. Ending on a positive note will leave a good impression and likely bring them back later for more. Tips: If you walk in on a conversation and have no clue what theyre talking about, dont say anything until youve figured out what theyre talking about.
