A Comment on Walter’s Response
to Jørgensen’s Dilemma:
Common Sense and Scientific
Attitudes
BRUCE ANDERSON
Robert Walter (1996) offers a way to face Jørgensen’s Dilemma (Jørgensen
1937–38). He explains that dilemma by comparing two types of syllogisms:
factual and normative syllogisms. For Walter, the factual syllogism is un-
problematic. Consider his analysis of this syllogism:
All human beings will die one day.
Socrates is a human being.
Socrates will die one day.
