Unit 3 A taste of English humour
The First Period Warming up Speaking
I. Teaching aims
1. Knowledge aims:
1). New words:verbal, nonverbal, mime, farce, crosstalk, doggerel, mountainous, whisper
2). Useful expressions:
I enjoy this very much because…
I laugh at that kind of thing because…
I felt happy because…
I’m pleased we were both amused at…
It surprises me that…
It is very amusing that…
This is fun because…
How wonderful / surprising!
2. Ability aim
Enable the students to talk about some types of English humour and Chinese humour.
3. Emotional aims
1). Help the students learn how to talk about some types of English and Chinese humour, and then find their differences.
2). Let the students listen, read, and then imitate the jokes, so that they can realize that humour is to let people to be optimistic about everything around.
II. Teaching important points
Help the students learn how to understand and enjoy English humors.
III. Teaching difficult points
Help the students know the differences between English and Chinese in humours.
IV. Teaching methods
Using pictures, discussion, reading and imitation.
V. Teaching procedures
Step ⅠGreetings
Greet the whole class as usual.
Step Ⅱ Lead-in
Start the new unit by showing the students a picture:
And lead in the topic of this unit—A taste of English humour.
Step III Warming up
1). Have students enjoy some jokes, and let one or two students translate these jokes into Chinese.
Joke 1. Policeman: Why did you have to break into the same shop 3 times?
Thief: Well, I stole a dress from that shop but my wife didn抰 like it. So I had to go back and change it twice!
eJoke2 Custom: What’s that fly doing in my soup?
Waiter: Swimming, I thinking!
2). Show some photos of famous funny stars and let students guess “who are they?”
3). look at the chart on page 17, explain those types of English humour and Chinese humour. After explanations, fill the chart of “Kinds of humour”
