Driven by endless desires, Carrie pays a heavy price for this so-called success—she breaks all ties with her family and betrays the men whom she thinks she has loved. Whats pathetic is that after she has achieved all the material comforts she has dreamed for, she still remains unhappy and will always be unhappy. Therefore, this thesis mainly applies the theory of psychoanalysis of Maslows hierarchy of needs to study the tragic fate of Carrie. When climbing up the ladder of the upper strata, Carrie does not win her dreaming happiness, only to suffer from endless hopelessness and mental torture.
