20302 Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to congratulate you on the organization of this demonstration. I am most grateful to the organizing committee for their kind invitation to this event. Let me tell you that I am looking forward to experiencing for myself the vehicles on display here. In Japan, we were told, about 9,000 people fall victim each year to fatal traffic accidents. The EU has exactly the same concern as Japan to cut road traffic accidents. Though things have improved in recent years, the sad statistic is that roughly one in every 80 European citizens can expect to be killed on the roads. One in three will, at least once in his or her life, need hospital treatment after an accident. The EU has begun an ambitious plan to improve road Safety. Like you, we have realized that the number of accidents could be greatly reduced if the vehicles were fitted with collision warning devices. Information and communication technologies promise safer, faster driving. Japans government has recognized the importance of developing intelligent transport systems. The EU also supports extensive research and technology development in this field. Transport is a key feature of modern life. We all want to continue to develop transport systems that are economical, safe, and that protect our environment and quality of life. We all want to retain the benefits of the car as it provides freedom and convenience. But we must all strive to do whatever possible to reduce road accidents.
