Abstract: Petrole m contaminants is one of the major poll tants in the Yellow River. Laboratory sim lation experiments were carried
o t to st dy the nat ral biodegradat ion of the petrole m contaminants. When adding 10mg/ L petrole m contaminants to the Yellow
River water samples containing 0 or 05g/ L sediment , the petrole m contaminants-degrading bacteria increased grad ally after abo t
one week of acclimatizat ion. With the sediment content of 05g/ L, abo t 85% petrole m contaminants w ith the initial concentration
of 1164mg/ L in river water co ld be degraded within 63 days at 20 . T he biodegradation rate was greatly infl enced by the sedi-
ment content and t he initial concentration of petrole m contaminants, and s ch effect was different from one degradation stage to an-
other. In addition, the existence of sediment affected the biodegradation kinetics of petrole m contaminants.
