Unit11 Ancient Cities 新世纪高职高专 旅游与酒店管理类课程规划教材 Contents Lead-in Text The Old Town of Lijiang The Old Town of Lijiang was firstly built in the late Song Dynasty and the early Yuan Dynasty and has a history of more than 800 years. It occupies an area of 3.8 square kilometers with about 30,000 residents living in it. The Old Town of Lijiang, the best-preserved ancient city of ethnic minorities with brilliant culture of China, is a central town of the Lijiang Autonomous County of the Naxi Ethnic Minority in Yunnan Province. It was built along the lie of mountains and the flow of rivers, providing a very precious sample for the research on its old and simple architectural style, the elegant art for the layout of the town, and multinational inhabitants. Text The old town is the only ancient city built without a city wall and the reason comes from an interesting story. Lijiang had been under the reign of the Mu family for more than 500 years. If the Chinese character“Mu” (represents the governor of Lijiang) is put into a frame (represents the city wall), you have the character“Kun” which means“trapped”. This would mean that the governing Mu family and their descendants would always be trapped like a rat in a hole. Because of this symbolism, the town was never given a city wall. As a result of mixture of the multinational culture and the progress of the Naxi ethnic minority, the unique Naxi architectural style is the fusion of the best parts of the architectural characteristics of Han, Bai and Tibet. Text Naxi people pay much attention to the decoration: the houses are mostly timber and tile structure combined with a garden, each has engraved vivid figures of people and animals on doors and windows, beautiful flowers and trees in the garden. The center of the old town is the square streets, which consist of four main streets extending to the four different directions. Countless lanes extend into all directions to form a network and connect every corner of t
