旅游英语阅读教程课件Unit 4

Unit4 Towers 新世纪高职高专 旅游与酒店管理类课程规划教材 Contents Lead-in Text Yellow Crane Tower Yellow Crane Tower is the symbol of Wuhan, Hubei Province. It is located on the Snake Hill in Wuchang, at the south bank of the Yangtze River. It is called one of the three most famous towers in southern China, together with Yueyang Tower in Hunan Province and Tengwang Tower in Jiangxi Province. First built in 223 AD, the tower has a history of over 1700 years. Originally it was built just for military lookout, not for visiting. During the South and North Dynasties some poets came here to remember the old war field of the Three Kingdoms Period and they wrote some poems to praise the beautiful scenery on the tower, particularly in the Tang and Song Dynasties. Text It was estimated that up to the Tongzhi Reign of the Qing Dynasty, as many as 300 poems about the tower had been found in the historical literature, in which“Yellow Crane Tower” wrote by Cui Hao(704-754), a famous poet of the Tang Dynasty made the tower well known throughout China. As time went on, it is not only an important scenic spot, but also a symbol of “piping times of peace” in people’s mind. The beautiful sight of scene impels guests from China and abroad to exclaim the tower with “Wonderful” and “No. One”. The legend about the tower has become a bright pearl of the Chinese literature. It goes that there used to be a wine-shop opened by a young man surnamed Xin. One day, a Taoist priest, in order to thank the man for his favor of free wine, drew a magic crane on the wall and told it to dance on hearing claps. Text Since then, thousands of people came to see the spectacle and the wine shop was always full of guests. After 10 years, when the Taoist priest revisited the wine shop, he played the flute and then rode on the crane to the sky. In order to memorize the supernatural encounter and the priest, the Xins built a tower here named Yellow Crane Tower. In the history the Yellow Crane Tower was destroyed
