For the first claim, I concede it is the undeniable responsibility for universities to help solve social problems, but their responsibility is not circumscribed in such a narrow scope. For the second the third claims, my position is a strongly opponent one, as discussed below. First I largely agree with the speaker insofar as universities should take on responsibility to help solve the social problems prevailing around the globe. In this sense, a global university has an evident ascendance. With researchers and students coming from nations all around the world, the global university could breed a more open, multicultural academic ambience as well as a social environment, in which different concepts and ideologies are fused together into a harmonious one. The ascendance is more evident in the scientific realm. Nowadays a lot of frontier technology and scientific research must be done with a large group of excellent scientists from every part of the world- such as the human genome research, biotechnology, frontier medicine and so forth. In short, not only in cultural, but also in scientific, the global universities all have a peerless advantage comparing with some other local ones. However, even if those global universities try to take on the responsibility to solve the social problems, hardly, it seems to me, can they alone afford this.
