Higher contrasts deliver a depth and brilliance that is immediately visible and increasing the density throughout the full tonal range widens the available range of colors and increases the color gamut. All of these features have a highly positive effect on shelf impact – but what about the cost? The power of DigiCap NX Screening is such that users are reporting all these benefits with no increased ink usage * * SCRIPT “But how can that be possible?,” I hear you say. Surely higher densities mean higher ink laydown. That’s the conventional wisdom that we’ve all been used to. If you want more density you lay down more ink. The secret with DigiCap NX, that dispels the current practice, lies with the smoothness of the ink laydown. * * SCRIPT In very simple terms a smooth ink laydown gives the best results for reflected density – which is typically how we view final print. A smooth layer assists with even color absorption and maximum color reflection. This is typical of roto-gravure print. Typical flexo does not have a smooth ink laydown. Instead there are areas of higher density interspersed with voids. This is especially typical of solvent inks on films. The voids and uneven ink laydown impact the color absorption and the intensity of reflected light. The result is a lower perceived density. With Flexcel NX Plates with DigiCap NX applied the ink laydown is much smoother and the voids are significantly reduced. The total volume of ink laid down is no different to the previous example but the resulting improvements in the evenness of color absorption and the amount of refected light mean that pe
