Part II ) Kiko NISHIZATO Summary The collisions between China and France about the Suzerainty over Vietnam became sharper after the 1870·s. In the first half of the 1880s, the Sino-French war broke out. and as a result of the defeat, China lost the Suzerainty over Vietnam. At the same period, a lot of chinese newspaper commented upon the Vietnam problem. and the many articles about the Sino-French war were to be seen in the newspapers almost every day. particulerly the Xunhuan Ribao (m~ B~) in Hongkong, the Shenbao (lfIfi) in Shanghai and the Shubao (i!t!fIi) in Guangzhou inspired the Chinese with patriot- ism.
