Sedmi ent disasters should be classified and graded in terms of their own system and rules that are appropriate for description of sedmi ent d isaster behaviors. A lthough differentmethods can be considered for classification and gradation, the proposed systematic classification of sedmi ent disasters based on major spherical layers of the earth is proved to be sel-f contained and is convenient for description of characteristics of sedmi ent dis- aster and its relations to other d isaster system s. One of themain behaviors of sedmi ent disasters is the chain effect. Therefore, the classification and gradation of sedmi ent d isaster chain are also discussed in connectionw ith sedmi ent disasters. Both single index and systematic classification methods are discussedw ith a priority of the latter ow ing to its advantages over the former in consideration of characteristics of sedmi ent d isaster
